Did you know you can save up to $1,500 for a number of energy-efficient improvements completed in 2009 & 2010?
Newer, more energy-efficient roofing materials, oil furnace models are available to install in your home. These energy efficient improvements will reduce your energy use, lower your energy bills and allow you to receive a federal tax credit. Replacing your roofs, old furnace with an energy-efficient models will provide you with up to $1,500 in tax credit savings under U.S. tax laws. The government has an established tax credit program that encourages homeowners to invest in energy-saving “green” products. Tax credits are a substantially better benefit than tax deductions. A tax credit of $1,500 will actually lower your taxes by $1,500. Expenses eligible for a tax deduction of $1,500 will only result in a small portion of the $1,500 to be returned to the consumer.
To claim the tax credit for energy efficient products ” placed in service” in 2009, you will need to file the 2009 IRS Form 5695 (directly from IRS website) and submit it with your 2009 taxes (by April 15, 2010). Currently, only a DRAFT version of the 2009 IRS Form 5695 is available (without the instructions section). For products “placed in service” in 2010, you would take the tax credit on your 2010 taxes. On the DRAFT 2009 1040 form , the residential energy tax credit (from Form 5695) is claimed on line 52.
Also save your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for your records. A Manufacturer’s Certification Statement is a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit.
